Self Drive Lake District & Chiloe

DAY 1: ARRIVAL PUERTO MONTT & FRUTILLLAR (APPROX. 85 KM)
In the morning arrival at Puerto Montt Airport and pick-up of rental car. We recommend a visit to Frutillar, located 50 km north of Puerto Montt, and explore its particular architecture. You should not miss a visit of the open-air German museum. Afterwards drive to Puerto Varas.
DAY 2: OSORNO & PETROHUE (APPROX. 162 KM)
Today we recommend you visiting the Vicente Perez Rosales national Park. Take your time for stop at the waterfall of Petrohue. Afterwards drive up to the slopes of the Osorno Volcano. You can make a short hike over lava fields and enjoy the impressive view over the Lake Llanquihue. In the afternoon return to Puerto Varas.
DAY 3: DRIVE TO CHILOE ISLAND, PUÑIHUIL PENGUIN COLONY -SUMMER- OR VISIT OF ANCUD -WINTER. (APPROX. 243 KM)
Leave Puerto Varas and drive south-east towards Chiloe Island. In the Summer season (November to March), head towards the West Pacific Coast to get to Puñihuil beach, from where the navigation to the penguin colony starts. In winter season (April to October) we recommend heading to Ancud, for visiting the famous fortress San Antonio, the last Spanish bastion in Chile.
DAY 4: VISIT OF CASTRO & TREKKING CHILOE NP (APPROX. 60 KM)
In the morning you may take your time for a visit of Castro, which is famous for its traditional “palafitos” (houses built on stilts along the shore) and the majestic wooden church (an UNESCO World Heritage Site). Afterwards we recommend going on excursion to Chiloe National Park, located approx. 58 km south-west of Castro. On well-marked trails you can explore the park’s interior as well as the beach. Afterwards drive back to Castro.
DAY 5: CASTRO, PUERTO MONTT (APPROX. 175 KM + FERRY)
Drive to Puerto Montt Airport to drop off your rental car and take your flight.
