Self Drive La Serena & Elqui Valley
4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS
DAY 1: LA SERENA, VICUÑA (APPROX. 68 KM)
Pick up your car at the airport or downtown rental office. Before you leave towards Vicuña, you may spend time visiting sites of La Serena, such as the Archaeological Museum, the picturesque “artesania” market of La Recova, the Japanese Garden or some of its 27 churches. Leave the city driving towards Vicuña passing by extensive grape plantations and the dam of Elqui River. For night owls, we recommend a visit to the El Pangue Observatory. Overnight in Vicuña.
DAY 2: VICUÑA, ALCOHUAZ (APPROX. 53 KM)
Today you will drive towards Alcohuaz, located at the banks of Claro River. A few kilometres away from Vicuña, you may visit the ABA Pisco distillery (Pisco Fuegos), where you can take a tour and enjoy a tasting of the “pisco”. On your further way to Alcohuaz you will pass by picturesque settlements, such as Monte Grande, which is birthplace of Nobel winning poetess Gabriela Mistral. In the afternoon you will reach Alcohuaz, a remote settlement with a lovely terracotta church.
DAY 3: ALCOHUAZ, LA SERENA (APPROX. 120 KM)
Leaving Alcohuaz towards La Serena, enjoy the beautiful landscape of the valleys of Claro and Elqui River. Before reaching La Serena you might make a detour to Coquimbo to visit its traditional fish market near the harbor, the beautiful Plaza de Armas with fountains and palm trees, el Cruz del Tercer Milenio or the fort. Afterwards drive to La Serena, where you will stay overnight.
DAY 4: LA SERENA
Depending on your flight time drive to La Serena Airport to drop off your rental car.
