Self Drive Chilean & Argentinean Lake District
7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS
DAY 1: TEMUCO, PUCON (APPROX. 112 KM)
Pick up your car at the airport or downtown rental office. Leave Temuco and drive towards Pucon, beautifully set at the shores of Villarrica Lake. Overnight in or close to Pucon.
DAY 2: PUCON AND SURROUNDINGS
Today you will have time to explore Pucon and its surroundings. We recommend visiting Villarrica National Park with its volcano, rivers and lagoons. Another option for today is a visit to the town of Curarrehue, a small Mapuche village with an interesting museum. You may end your day with a relaxing bath at Huife Hot Springs. Overnight in or close to Pucon.
DAY 3: PUCON, SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES (APPROX. 177 KM)
For today’s border crossing to Argentina you have two options: By taking the Mamuil Malal Pass or the Huahum Pass. Choosing the first alternative you will drive through scenery changing from native forest to the dry Argentinean Pampa. The second option (possible between November and March) includes a beautiful 2 hours ferry ride on Lake Pirihueico. Then your drive takes you to San Martín de Los Andes, where you will stay overnight.
DAY 4: SAN MARTIN DE LOS ANDES, SAN CARLOS DE BARILOCHE (APPROX. 196 – 264 KM)
For your drive to San Carlos de Bariloche you will have two options: on national routes all way long paved or by taking the scenic Route of the 7 Lakes (40 km of this road are still unpaved and in bad conditions, therefore only recommendable in summer time and with jeeps). Overnight in Bariloche.
DAY 5: BARILOCHE, PUERTO VARAS (APPROX. 340 KM)
Leaving Bariloche and passing Villa La Angostura you soon reach Cardenal Antonio Samoré Pass crossing into the Chilean Puyehue National Park. According to your time schedule you can have a relaxing bath at the Puyehue hot springs. Head further towards Puerto Varas, located on the shores of Llanquihue Lake. Overnight in Puerto Varas.
DAY 6: PUERTO VARAS AND SURROUNDINGS
You have plenty of very interesting places to discover: You should not miss a visit to Osorno Volcano and Vicente Perez Rosales National Park. Another highlight is visiting Chiloe Island. From October to March penguins can be seen at Puñihuil. Worthwhile are also explorations of Llanquihue National Reserve, Reloncaví Fjord, Frutillar & Puerto Octay or a catamaran tour to Peulla. And for more active people there are various options for Horseback Riding, Rafting, Kayaking, or Fly Fishing. Overnight in Puerto Varas.
DAY 7: PUERTO VARAS, PUERTO MONTT (APPROX. 25 KM)
Leave Puerto Varas and drive to Puerto Montt. According to your flight time you can make a detour to downtown Puerto Montt and visit its famous fish-market Angelmo.
Passes between Chile and Argentina may be closed in winter season (up to several days) due to snow and weather conditions.
