An apacheta is a sacred place made of a small pile of rocks, built along the trails of the Andean Highlands by ancient travelers. It was the place to worship the gods for luck and protection. This program is a fascinating traverse through the Altiplano, discovering Andean villages, pukaras, pristine landscape and the innumerable apachetas along our way…

DAY 1: ARICA, CODPA

Arrival at Arica Airport and time for a visit of the city center.  Afterwards transfer to Codpa, where we will stay overnight. We will visit Copda and Guañacagua churches. Its bell towers are one of the best examples of Andean Barroco in the Chilean Andes.

DAY 2: CODPA, PUTRE

After early breakfast we will visit the Petroglyph of Ofragia, an interesting archaeological site where is possible to see draw of animals, people, and geometric designs made by the ancestors of local inhabitants. On our way to Putre we will pass through several old hispanic villages, like Tignamar, Saxamar, Belén, with their interesting churches made during the Spanish colonization. Finally we will reach Putre, located 3,500 meters above the sea level.

DAY 3: PUTRE, SURIRE, PUTRE

Today we will head towards Las Vicuñas National Reserve and visit Guallatire village, located at the foothills of an impressive volcano. We will drive on scenic cross country roads to Surire Salflat, and on our way we may be able to see three species of flamingoes, among many other birds. After a bath on Polloquere hot springs, we will return to Putre.

DAY 4: PARQUE NACIONAL LAUCA, ARICA

After an early morning breakfast we will head towards Chungara Lake, located in Lauca National Park, surrounded by impressive snowcapped volcanoes. On our way we will stop in several viewpoints, and finally we will reach Arica.

DAY 5: LEAVE ARICA

Before leaving Arica, we will drive towards the Sam Miguel de Azapa, where the archaeological museum is located. This museum holds a whole collection of artifacts, textile, pottery that belonged to the ancient culture of the area. Afterwards, we will head towards Chacalluta airport.
